Smallholder Agroforestry Carbon Project
To establish sustainable agriculture and agroforestry, Lima has been actively selling, distributing and setting-up village-based nurseries to ensure farmers have access to high quality tree seedlings. However, access does not always translate to uptake due to two main challenges:
- Capital requirements: Establishing a dense agroforestry system requires a farmer significant capital which is only returned after 5 years when the trees start producing fruits.
- Farmer preference: Farmers tend to invest in commercial tree varieties, limiting intercropping of native trees.
Our main objective
To restore 20,000 hectares of degraded smallholder farmland to sustainable and diverse agroforestry systems. This will be done by planting 3.8 million tree seedlings with 53,000 smallholder farmers within 7 years in Njombe, Mbeya and Songwe regions, Tanzania.
Approach
We have developed three main agroforestry systems together with our smallholder farmers. Within these systems we have selected tree species which are suitable for the micro-climate and benefit farm, farmer and the environment. 30% of the planted trees will be native tree species.
